Vol. 1 2006/06
I am delighted to share with you some thoughts on the importance of making your university experience an enriching one in this latest edition of ISS.u.e.
Today, we are especially happy that NUS has a world-class student body that extends far beyond the geographical boundaries of Singapore. More then 20% of our students come from overseas and approximately 50% of our campus residents are international students. NUS is an oasis for young international talents to share knowledge, experiences, dreams and aspirations, and promotes cross-cultural consciousness and competence. Campus life is therefore an excellent opportunity for students to create positive intellectual, social and learning experience, create open minds and willingness to learn from others their ideas, values and cultures, and forge strong ties and enduring friendships which goes beyond life at NUS.
The education landscape today has changed in tune with the globalization trend. As the world becomes borderless, a global corporate and business culture has changed the profile desired of a graduating student. University graduates are now expected to possess broad-based knowledge, are well founded in domain knowledge, possess people skills, have an open mindset with global perspectives and the ability to multi-task. A degree does not necessarily ensure a level playing field and a double degree in name does not double one’s advantage to succeed. Hence, students need to realize from the onset that the degree is not a cap but a basic endorsement of a formal journey to success and that they need to pack their university experience beyond the academic realm to encapsulate other aspects of ïnformal’ learning that would equip them to rise to new tasks and challenges.
The NUS experience provides multitude and abundant opportunities for self development beyond the academic pursuits, and through proactive and independent learning, you will be able to develop a learning-for-life philosophy that will equip you better in a fast-paced changing landscape. I strongly encourage you to take ownership and responsibility of your self development and to tap on to every available opportunity that would enrich your university experience and develop you in a more holistic way.
Last but not least, we wish you happy reading of our latest edition of ISS.u.e and the very best for your examinations!
Sincerely,
Reza Shah Mohd Anwar
