Last night, I only got to know there was a dutch match until we skyped with Guus's family.
They came online a little earlier than usual so that we could have our chat finished before the game started.
Then Guus tuned into Radio 1, a dutch channel, on the internet. It was the same commentators who were broadcasting the match. Of course my dutch is not good enough to get all the happenings, but at least I can follow the game by the tone and speed of the commentator. Before Dutch team score their first goal, the commentator spoke faster and faster and I could almost see the ball pass by several players from the other team. Finally, there was the loud cheer, and you don't need to understand Dutch to know they scored!
Then, my mum sent me a message that she was following the game too in Beijing at the same time. Said she just watched the first goal. So I replied her that we were listening to radio at home because we had noTV.
Then I asked Guus:"why not we go to watch the game at the Hawker Centre about 10mins walk away?" He said:" yeah, that is a great idea. We can go around half-time break."
Then, I got another message from my mum. Could not stop smiling when reading it "you should try to go somewhere to watch the live match". 真不愧是我妈的女儿。
To our surprise, the hawker centre was almost full with people watching the match. 99% were male. The situation reminded me of my previous post about world cup. Guus said he was flattered with so many people watching his country's team.
To be frank, the second half was not as exciting as I expected. There were several almost-in goals which brought noisy from audience, but they all missed the gate for a little distance. And near the end, the dutch team was obviously in slow-motion to decrease the chance for the other team to control the ball. Guus later explained that it was because a Win gave 3 points, so the leading team rather played safe. IN the end, Dutch won by 1:0.
One little joke about us. At one time, I said that "isn't the xx team's forwarder yue4 wei4/offside already?" Guus looked really surprsied at me:"wah, you know that? Not many women know that." I immediately felt insulted. "yeah, I do know some basics such as free kick and penlty." I may not be a football fan, butI enjoy good football just like a nice piece of art or music.
later after the game, Guus said amusingly that "who can imagine that my family in Alphen, your mum in Beijing and us in Singapore are all watching the same match at the same time?" I guess that is the magic of World Cup.
