Today is Thursday, the forth day of being violently coughing since Monday.
Getting up in the morning and feeling the whole throat is swollen. Really had a difficult time to swallow breakfast.
Lunch, I had a bowl of plain porridge. Feeling a real comfort. Then off to bed for a little nap.
Wake up around 3:15 and the sun is finally out after Only-God-knows how many grey and cloudy days. Have tea with butter cookies, then off we go out for a walk in the nice weather.
The surrounding is so quite. We walk around on pebble-stoned street. The air is still a bit chilling though on the electronic board it shows 5 degree celsius. So I decide better take a shorter road across the field and quickly back to the house.
Small brick houses with all kinds of front gardens align the road. White steam pouring out from chimneys. Probably wives are preparing dinner around this time.
Though i have walked through the same street, I have some new discoveries today.
First, many people have bright yellow or orange pumpkin type fruits in their garden. Halloween has long passed, but they are still sitting on the chairs in the front gardens. So cheerful, So bright, So lovely!
Second, on the front of one house, there is this brightly painted orange cartoon cat made out of hard cardboard standing beside the door. On it says " Hoi, it is a boy." and then on the opposite side of the door, there is another small cloud shaped cardboard written with the baby boy's name. I am quite surprised because the Dutch people have the tradition to use a bird to send the notice of newborn babies. They even rent a fake one to stand in the garden. But Guus says not everybody stick to the rule. Actually I like this orange cat more than the bird, especially his long curled tail on the ground :p
Thrid, on the turn to the field, I am so surprised to find a beautiful male peacock with green and blue feathers standing in a farmer's yard. We try to make him angry by making all kinds of noises in hope that he will display his tail, but he just ignores us. Then we walk a few steps further, at the back yard belongs to the same person, there is this huge goose standing right in the middle of the yard. He stands there so proudly with his chest out in the air, so much like a guarding soldier. But the most striking is his big bright orange mouth and feet. (Strangely everything is orange today, Netherlands' national colour too.) And he starts to walk towards us while making a loud sound. Looks like he doesn't really like us being there. GUus starts to talk about how dangerous goose can be because they can bite and the first reaction I have is to step away from the fence. Just at this time, from the small gate behind the goose, there came the same peacock we have seen earlier and two chickens. "Oh my god, what else could they have in there? " i exclaim. Really, goose and chicken together is no big deal, but with peacock, this is really the first time I see. "Maybe elephant? Only he can't come out through that small gate." Guus replies me jokingly.
We say goodbye to the poultry farm and continue our walk towards the field. There are still some sugar beats left in the filed, but mostly are just grass. Guus says once in a while he would miss this scene, this quietness. So I say then we need to find a farm in Singapore to cure his homesickness. But then he protests, "yeah, there are parks in Singapore. But everything is so neatly maintained. You won't see dark patch of soil among the grass or just some long uncut weeds." For that, I agree.
So we stand in the middle of the field, among the sugar beats, trying to capture the picture in our minds. At the edge of the field, there is the dark forest with white mists hovering around. Really looks like the forbidden forest in Harry Potter. The sun is just setting. The sky is a deep blue on the top and fades slowly to white as it goes down. But at the middle, the sky starts to turn to orange then red and followed by a faint purple. There are several airplanes flying in the sunset with golden lining around them and white trails in the air look just like comet's tails. But they are more like fishes now, swimming in a huge acquarium of gold and orange and pink couloured water. Some swims faster while others slower. Then suddenly, they just disappear in the air.
The last surprise finding is a yard of three dears at the edge of the field. They are probably frightened by us, retreat to the corner furtherest away from us and standing still to watch us. Oh, and I have actually saw a few ponies in other backyards earlier. Pity that they don't dare to approach us, so all I can do is waving to them with my purple glove.
So that is our lovely little walk in the field. Guus says I am living a pig's life recently, so I decided to write this blog to prove he is wrong.
