Got a New nokia 3120 to replace my lost Ericsson T105. Choosing it not because it was the cheapest model avaliable, but also because it was probably the simplest model I can find in the shop.
Although that is the case, I am still overwhelmed when I enter the message function and saw a whole list of:
1Test messages
2Multimedia messages
3Voice messages
4Info messages
5 ..
6 ..
Going into other functions, the situation is the same. So of functions I have never used before (e.g. voice messages, games) and some I don’t think I will ever need(e.g. the email and download application functions). But the problem is with these extra functions, it makes performing a simple task seems really complicated.
For example, when I want to hang-up the phone, I automatically press the same bottom when I answer it, thinking it will terminate the call. But the reality is, when I press it once, a screen jump out with three options
1. louderspeaker
2. hang-up
3. etc.
Another example, when I want to write a new message, I have to
1. go to Menu
2. select Messages
3. select Text messages
4. type in new message
while for my previouis two handphones, I can skip step 3. Luckily, later I found a Hotkey -- to directly go to an empty screen which I can start writing straight away.
While I know some people would say “isnt the Hotkeys solved all the problems?” But the fact is You Cant have too many Hotkeys. And with the not-so-many Hotkeys on my new phone, I am already feeling confusing to remember each of their specialities.
And I am really glad to find somebody sharing the same feeling as me --- Kay Itoi wrote in “Keep It simple, Please!” (Newweek
“My three-year-order handphone boasts, among many other things, a camera, a removable memory card, a sound recorder and player, a watch that shows the time everywhere in the world and a digital scheduler. Needless to say, I've never used any of these features.”
From her aritlce, I learnt a new word—“overspeced”, meaning obsessive-compulsive engineering. Well, of course. The new versions have their merits. E.g. bigger colourful screen and under one name, you can now save more than one number. But I think the designers shouldn’t forget that afterall, the main purpose of this gardet is for communication, i.e. Calling and Messaging. I wouldn’t care if it can download pictures and ringtones from the web or can change the colour theme of the display.
If I am given the chance to design my perfect Handphone, I would choose the following features (considering from the three models I have used before Nokia 3310, Erricson T105, Nokia 3120):
1. small and light (like T105) with big lighted screen and relatively big button (like Nokia)
2. Keep software of Nokia 3310 (esp the message part)
+ sony T105’s count of SMS sent function and able to set counter zero
+ T105’s recurssive alarm (so I can which day of the week I want the alarm to work and don’t have to reset every night)
+ be able to design go-to functions freely (like T105, 3120 only allows me to choose from a pre-determined set)
3. Triband for everywhere in the world
4. Polytone ring tone
5. easily changed cover for entire handphone(like 3310)
