One thing that strike me these days is that what's the identity of Singaporeans?
They speak english, however they don't have very strong background on English literature, they don't really have the value, philosophy or way of thinking as westerners. They mostly inherited the values from their parents, which actually has still have strong chinese background. However they cannot speak very good chinese, which prevent them from further understanding of chinese culture and traditions.
The government want to be proficient in both Engish and Chinese so as to maximise its ability in dealing with the more and more competitive society. It may lead to economic prosperity, however the reality is it doesn't make it to establish a really strong culture identity, which i think is the most improtant for national identity. Without this, people may find themselves to have a feeling of belonging.
