There are four types of behavioural styles: the craftsman, the jungle fighter, the company
man and the gamesman. No one is purely of one type, but rather, containing a mixture,
depending on the circumstances and personalities.
Craftsmen: They hold basic values about work ethic and are concern for quality. The love
the process of creating and building. They tend to be authoritarian and impatient with
others. They rarely make it to senior management level as they value their own interests
above teamwork.
Jungle Fighters: They live by the laws of the jungle; they are power-oriented. They
believe in winners take all and tend to be very defensive. They fear that their subordinates
will overtake them, as such they are not good mentors and shy away from developing
their own employees.
Company men: They are concerned with the people in the organisation. They are loyal to
the company. However, as they are security-minded, they tend to be ineffective leaders.
One strong point of such style is that they help to develop an atmosphere of group
cohesiveness and cooperation.
Gamesmen: They are interested in challenge and competition. They like to won and are
good motivators. They respect new ideas, fresh approaches and neat strategies. They
usually speak well and are witty. They are also very tactful knowing how and when to act.
Combination of gamesman and company man are considered to be a good combination
for managers/leaders as they have a clear vision of their career goals and yet feel a
responsibility for the system, so which categories do you (or think you) belong to?
