Unlike most of my fellow Chinese comrades, I seldom dislike Singaporeans. But sometimes I really do.
Library should be a quiet and peaceful place where students are able to study without getting disturbed or distracted. But some ugly behaviors of Singaporean student turned the school library to a market place.
I'm not saying Singaporean students are the only ones not following the rules in the library, but the number of events done by them sure wins over the rest of the nationalities. (Sorry for the weird terms used, I just finish my quiz on Probability and Statistics)
During one of the free afternoons last week, I was unwillingly happily doing my maths tutorials in the library. This young lady who sat two tables behind me started talking on phone.
Usually when I receive or make a call while I'm in library, I would walk away from the study area with all the tables and try to hide behind the bookshelves, or face the open area. In that case other people who are studying won't be affected by my conversation through the phone. Or if it is just a short conversation, I would keep my voice as low as possible, and cover my mouth with hand to stop voice from spreading out.
This Singaporean lady obviously didn't need any privacy. She also assumed that everyone who were studying nearby were interested in her conversation. She started answering the phone as if she was in her own room. I was praying for her conversation to end soon, or for her phone to run out of battery. But those didn't happen. Her happy chit chat with friend lasted for at least 10 minutes. Even my stares and 'Shh!-s' didn't affect her determination to continue talking.
It was even worse this morning, again they were sitting 2 tables behind me, 3 guys, Singaporeans. They made full use of the meeting room as big as a library the library to carry out their discussion, making sure not only they themselves, but also others in the same level could hear them loudly and clearly. Minutes later one guy's genetic disease suddenly broke out one guy start kicking the floor with both his legs. Trying to demonstrate? Go get a permit first.
I keep on staring at the group of people, trying to tell them I was really irritated. Finally, after 20 seconds to react, another guy told the guy kicking the floor in mandarin: ‘停下来,有人在看你Liao!’ ('Stop it, there's people looking at you.') Finally.
There are way more incidences of those Singaporeans talking loudly in library, while sitting down or walking pass. Should I relate this phenomenon to those who blast music through their tiny earphone on train? Do they have hearing problem or something?
Some of them always have this arrogant expression of their faces. They talk loudly to attract attention, also to show people they 'heck care', they got 'seh' (personality / charm).
BULL SHIT!
I really look down on you people. It's always those who are lack of substances that are desperately trying to show off or seek attention.
Just to add another point, some young Singaporean students are really not friendly with the China Chinese here. Of course they are friendly when there's a need to ask you questions regarding study, or when he want to sit beside you during a test. (You know what I mean.) Most of the time they still address Chinese students as 'China Man'. For those who don't know, that's a very discriminative way of addressing China Chinese.
Singapore government is having more communications with China, yes. But it's only those people in the government who can see the big image. Our dear student in NTU are still worrying about there hostel rooms and rankings in class being nabbed away by 'China Man'.
Have decided to add the 'Some' in the title, so my innocent Singaporean friends and other kind souls are not wrongly condemned. - 19/10/06 2:05

I think you got the point there. I agree that some Chinese are rather spoilt due to the One-Child-Policy in China. They might not be good at handling inter-personal relationship as well.
I do believe those who came overseas earlier while they were young are easier to get alone with. Maybe because they are more adapted to the foreign culture too.
That's the problem of the one-child policy in China. Many of them (excluding the author of this blog) think the world revolves around them. And that's why the PRC students are so different from the Malaysian/ Indonesian/ Vietnamese students (who mostly come from big families), many of whom rent rooms off-campus instead of complaining till the cows come home... and its NOT like they are very rich either.
aiyah. stupid people.
ps. defensive behaviour brings out the worst in people. lol.
Yes. I read ur blog from head to toe. Dun have to refer a 2nd time. I meant what i meant.
shiyun
If you can do anything you want on blogging, then what is the reason for the arrest for the blogger who wrote racist remarks on his blog?
If I am a Singaporean and I am posting something like this about Chinese behaving badly, I won't be surprised to see a lot of vulgarities in comments written by Chinese.
I would admit that Singaporean and most foreigners behave better online compare to Chinese. Although there are still comments here that don't really make sense...
This is the owner's blog and he has the right to express what he wants to say here. if you people feel offended, just click the red X square on the top right hand corner of ur browser.
and to Jojoshi:
"Singaporean complain a lot, but really sometimes they complain too much and ask for the impossible."
and what about u? i think, by not expressing your opinions (not complaining to friends or blog about it) has resulted in your pent-up emotions which generalise that one Singaporean in a group of China students will always be ignored. i have a couple of China Chinese friends and they are some of the best people i've ever known.
to owner of blog,
sorry for the flooding with the above comments.
Please refer to the first word in the title of this blog entry and some of my comments if you didn't do so.
And if u want to talk about probability and statistic, How come I keep obseving indecent behaviours among foreign students from china? Just today, i saw 2 china students smooching in tutorial rooms, a few couples on benches along my way to bus stop. Belief u me that this is a damn common sight and so far most of them are china students. Well this can only be considered as bias sampling as it is only my own observation. it isn't right to say that china students are horny and sexually deprived right?
So pls. Keep your bloody comments to yourself.
Orh please don't tell me you are Singaporean, you are degrading Singaporeans' image here.
One who can read cannot make reasonable comments? Sad case...
You had mentioned in your comment 'Don't understand why you guys think its a goddamn right that you get a hostel room. '
Please take note that in my comment, I stated '{There are} Chinese students in NTU ....', and I did not mention I am one of those who think that way, neither did I show any degree of agree to their thoughts.
Hence I don't think it is appropriate for you to use the term 'you guys' which includes me in your comment.
go back to native land and study maybe?
ur ricefields might need more ppl
bah.
Don't understand why you guys think its a goddamn right that you get a hostel room. The universities in UK, US and Australia don't give priority for on-campus housing for international students. If you can't get a room, its your own problem, go fix it yourself, find a room to rent off-campus. Why can't some of you do that? Some of your people are really weak. No backbone at all.
Btw, I'm qualified to say I see no difference between Australians and S'poreans in general terms of behaviours. Have U live abroad yet? Ask yourself.
The 5th commentator has actually already said it quite plainly...it's all to do with the individual's upbringing.
would someone bother to refute this?
i'm not saying that all are like that, because some of them (like our good friend gerald) are totally accepting of other people.
but i've heard with my own ears, singaporean friends who make tasteless comments about the people from these 3 countries as mentioned above.
this is cos singaporeans think they are a notch above all the rest of the world. honestly, you can't blame them cos their country IS prosperous. but still. has all their basic human respect gotten lost in all the affluence?
I'm a Singaporean and I have issue with some Singaporean folks as well. Sometimes I wish we'd be a little more sensitive to other people.
Having lived in DC for awhile I find it utterly amazing how the metro works and how the MRT works. In the morning on the Metro, everyone automatically steps to one side. They know that they should let the people in the train out first. Blocking their way just makes the process only more complicated and slows it down. In Singapore everyone seems interested in getting on and off at the same time. What a pain... Both are of course guided by self interest... just that DC folk are smart in figuring out that it is in their self interest to make way for those getting off... While Singaporeans are a little slow in figuring out that if i stand to one side, i'll get on faster.
Anyway, dun listen to some of your posters. They're just being childish.
i myself am a singaporean and as much as i hate it when my fellow singaporeans make noise in the library or other places which require a certain degree of "socially acceptable" behaviour, i have also seen chinese PRCs demonstrating such behaviour too. and even now in australia (i'm studying there) i still see it.
talking loudly in lecturs when the lecturer is speaking, shouting across to one another across the road, discussing answers and assignments in the library even though "SILENCE" singns are visably displayed on the study carrels. it happens. I'm not delibrately slamming you people. but LOOK AROUND YOU. such behaviour is probably why there is racism around the world. (of why the caucasions hate asians) its because they do stuff to irritate them
there will never be perfect people in this world because Man himself is full of imperfections.
The point i'm trying to bring here is that such things happen. people are bound to irritate you but being a patron of the library yourself, did you have the moral courage to confront the people who were disturbing the peace and chide them?
the pot calling the kettle black.
I'm sure frustration was one of your emotions when you blog this post. I respect the first part of your blog regarding library users.
However, your ending reeks of an individual who regards yourself very highly and a man of substance. I believe you must be, or Else, poor S'porean taxpayers at the end of the day. The scenarios you have painted can only be seriously treated if you were strong enough to stand up and tell those irritants off instead of labelling 'SOME' s'poreans as short-sighted. I'm sure you would love for small S'pore to bow to big China.
"Oh, Great Spirit, keep me from ever judging a man until I have walked a mile in. his moccasins." Sioux Prayer.
Thank you for the effort of leaving such a long comment here.
Regarding the noise in MRT, I faced the same problem, but most of the time I can't be bothered by those young people and I'd rather ignore them, or walk to another cabin. Guess shiyun only brought that issue up because I have been complaining a lot and it's somehow related? Hur hur...
I am fully aware of some bad habits Chinese have among all nationalities. But talking loud? I don't think so. At least none of my close Chinese friends from China or Singapore talk loud in library.
Regarding 'high discrimination when a Singaporean tries to be friendly to him, assuming that the Singaporean is asking for favours.', that case never happen to me. First of all I'm not lack of local friends. Secondly they make friend with me not because they need my favours. My results are poor in fact. (oops) But such phenomenon do happen between some other Chinese and Singaporeans as I had observed.
I agree with you that quite a number of Chinese here only keep to themselves, and as I mentioned before they are somehow 'anti-Singaporean'. Hence I believe it will need both side's effort to improve their relationship.
There are Chinese who straight away start complaining about almost everything once they have reached Singapore. There are Chinese students in NTU blame the school for putting them in the same hostel allocation system as local students. (not the same in fact, they need lesser points) One even said 'the government wanted us to come over, but didn't tell us we need ECA points to get a room.'
Some people just take everything for granted and show no appreciation to Singapore or Singaporeans. Some people dislike Singaporeans through out their stay in Singapore. To those China Chinese, I shall quote a sentence from Tamaki which I didn't agree earlier on: 'i'll just have to put up with all of that, so if you can't take it, no one is forcing you to stay, a vacancy for another person will definitely benefit your comrades who hopes to come to sg..'
Of course, I will agree with the MRT loud music and endless handphone ringtones ringing being irritating, but aren't you being teeny weeny bit spolit by expecting all these to just disappear from the MRT.
I took the MRT everyday, and of course I can say such things happen but they dun really happen every day and every time I took the MRT. If you live in a society, such things happen and exists in which ever country you are in. Japanese are notorious for being considerate and well-behaved, but taking a Japan subway, you will find that they have also no lack of loud music from their youngsters.
Singaporean complain a lot, but really sometimes they complain too much and ask for the impossible.
Like said before, to label nationality is a big mistake, coz to tell you the true. Talking loudly in libraries or any other places is a bad habit of Chinese. And by Chinese here, I mean Chinese as in we are all yellow-skinned, both Singapore Chinese and China Chinese. It is a bad habit of our race itself, nothing to do with nationality. If you really want to point out the ugly truth, sailing miles away from China and being bornt on another land still have not correct us of our bad habits, including gambling and others. Chinese LOVE to talk LOUDLY, and they are not worried if other people can hear them. They probably never even think about that as a action of disturbance to other people until we get to know the white people.
The blogger mentioned that he himself would have done differently, but how confident is him that his fellow countrymen will do as he has done in Singapore or in China. I as a Singaporean will also talk softly and move to outside the library or toliet area if I wanted to talk on the phone (btw, hiding behind shelves doesn't really help even a little bit, except maybe no one can see who is the culprit.) but that is only me. I do that, most Singaporeans don't. The blogger does that, but also most China people don't.
Also, the blogger has also shown high discrimination when a Singaporean tries to be friendly to him, assuming that the Singaporean is asking for favours. I have an experience once when I am the only Singaporean in a China group. The group persist in talking about all the things in China which of course I have absolutely no idea of and cannot contribute even one sentence of conversation. Worst still, not one of them will start to talk to me, but all, I repeat, all of them try to treat me as if I am invisible or not there at all. That is rudness in its advance stage, and I dun make a point of complaining to my Singaporean friends and blog about that. Most of the time, a Singaporean in the company of China people is highly ignored unless there is no other people around and we are stuck on the same table. Even so, trying to talk to them is like trying to talk to a wall most of the time, you can sense that they are just trying to humor you and if possible, get out of that place as soon as possible.
I just like to point out, China students in NTU are actually only sticking to their own China group with no attempt at even mixing with the Singapore China. Indian students make a bigger effort, or they are more willing to try and mix. If you present an attitude that says "Don't come near me", of course all Singaporean Chinese will stay away from you unless they are desperate for help. As the Chinese saying goes, why should I stick my warm face onto your cold bum. Especially since, we are on Singapore grounds.
To Tamaki:
I am very well prepared that this article might receive counterviews from both Chinese and Singaporeans. But it's alright, it's not the first day that I am kind of 'in between' of both parties.
I never mention I would want to leave Singapore because people make noise in the library. It's kind of immature for you to make such comments like '..., so if you can't take it, no one is forcing you to stay,...'
I do appreciate this opportunity given by Singapore government and my schools to me. So I was able to study in secondary school and junior college here free of charge. It's not like I can't afford for this, but free-of-charge sure help my family to make decision sending me here.
Also like I mentioned in my comment dated 2006-10-19 to Ridzuan Ashim, 'I have been living in Singapore for the last 8 years ... and I do feel like I am part of this country.'
And please just refer to few comments below where I reply to samuel, 'I have no intention at all to critisize Singapore or Singaporeans as a whole.'
I would very much like to stay in Singapore if everything goes on well and continue living here.
:)
Singaporean's birth rate is below its replacement rate (correct me if I'm wrong), and that is why the government had decided to offer scholarship to foreign student, some even without bonds (like what I got in my secondary school and JC). Singapore is very reliable on high quality human recourse to maintain its key position in southeast asia.
So I believe China Chinese are 'invited' over to Singapore to receive high standard education and are most welcomed and expected to stay here after they graduate as part of the nation's contributor.
Ok, what I'm trying to say is hence I don't think it's fair for Chinese students to be discriminated or isolated here just because most of them are hardworking.
They have taken a number of hostel rooms, yes. But do they have a choice? I think it's not them but the school who should take responsibility of having not enough rooms for all students. Since decision have been made to bring in more foreign students, other facilities should match the quantity and quality as well.
However NTU's concern now is to open as many new schools as possible, get as many students as they can. The only new canteen will be in use only in 2008, not to mention any new hostels.
i'll just have to put up with all of that, so if you can't take it, no one is forcing you to stay, a vacancy for another person will definitely benefit your comrades who hopes to come to sg..
I did try to signal them by turning around and look at them. I believe it's kind of a cultural tradition that most Chinese are not likely to speak up in this kind of incidents. I would consider to tell them directly if they had continued making noise though. Or would have gone to seek help from librarians.
I admit that I was more or less exasperated and was not totally calm while blogging this entry. In fact I was right inside the library using the school computer to blog right after the incidents.
Hence I did edit come contents and the title after a while, and I did further explaination in my comments too.
Yes, I agree with you. There's black sheeps everywhere from all countries. like 'd' mentioned it's just that those incidents happened on me were related to singaporeans.
I have no intention at all to critisize Singapore or Singaporeans as a whole.
If you can read Chinese, I think you can sense this kind of feeling (of looking down on Singaporeans) in some of other peoples' comments here.
err... what's wrong with this? I think it's a valid concern. I can see where the local's worries are stemming from.
Big image?
It might be that bad upbringing of child what made these bad behavior.
For example, name2 will seem to make the china chinese rude, while name who posted on 18/10 will make Singaporeans rude, while most of us who belong to Singapore, China or any other country is trying to give good comments. The small minority are the ones that made all these unwanted attention and troubles
Besides, you are in Singapore now. Even if you don't put the nationality, everyone would know that its a Singaporean that you are referring to. If so, why the special need to mention the nationality?
But well... its your choice.
= )
I still feel it is an individual upbringing. I very quiet and considerate in Library one.
Thousand others might be following the rules, but these few who make noise will get noticed and give others a bad impression.
Just like if you go to China, and you see people spitting on the floor. You would feel 'Orh those Chinese are so dirty, they spit everywhere', you won't think it's just some individual actions.
The fact is somehow people tend to think that the frequency of individual actions is proportional to the average level of the whole population.
If one student make noise, okay, he's a black sheep. What if 3 students, 5 students all make noise? So many black sheeps will make people wonder whether they represent the whole. If few products can't pass the QC, the whole batch can't be sold in the market.(i.e. send to The Reject Shop so I can purchase? hur hur..)
The paragraphs above are refering to all actions done by any individuals of any nationality, taking it personally is unnecessary.
Come on 'name' and 'name2', dont leave a comment here if u are not willing to show ur name. Before u decide to spend time to flame others, spend some time thinking of a name for urself. (U have a birth certificate? Maybe u can check it up. It should be in the name row if u have the cert.)
like gerald says, we're the "better crop". hahahahahaha!
Hur hur...
I know, I know. Thank you all for the comments. I feel much better now.
But I am more stressed at the same time because I am more looking forward to get a good result for this sem.
Ha.. Just finished all my quizzes today, so now I can concentrate on final revision. Why are the lecturers still teaching new stuffs!
Don't be too stressed ya? The exam welfare package just got introduced...all the tutorial rooms open 24hours i think.....heh, i don't study much either although i really should...hate exams.
Thumbs up to Wuvist on his effort to make this blog more user-friendly!
He was only saying that he could not understand what 苏樱 had said.
Anyway, I like library~ Because it is quiet...
I have been living in Singapore for the last 8 years (6 more days to 8 years sharp to be exact) and I do feel like I am part of this country.
I also understand and have noticed that there are people of other nationalities who behave badly in library as well, including my fellow countrymen. However the most recent and serious cases I have experienced were all committed by Singaporeans.
While it is already very rare for me to study, I still get distracted by all kinds of noise in the library!
I would really appreciate if these people can think from other people's point of view and be more considerate. Library is after all a place for study.
Sorry for the inconvenience caused by the Chinese interface, the admin of blogwind is rather busy to develop a English UI.
I'm a Singaporean NTU student and I don't think it's right to just single out the singaporeans(because there are lots of others of other nationalities who are just as inconsiderate). i think by virtue of the fact that the bulk of students are singaporeans give rise to a higher probablity that the 'offenders' are singaporean.
However, I do agree that those acts should be frowned upon and you have every right to feel angry.
I wouldn't have commented if not for the fact that I read the other comments posted on your blog. I find it extremely childish for 'name' and 'name2' to be writing such comments and hiding behind a veil of anonymity and indulging in name-calling is certainly a very cowardly act. C'mon...whoever you are, have some balls.
P.S. I can't read mandarin thus my lack of understanding what the other mandarin comment is...
